Accelerator for Biosciences in Connecticut launched its first program at the start of 2018 and aims to support the development of Connecticut as a hub of bioscience invention and commercialization. Twelve promising ventures have now successfully completed the inaugural program, which has already received support from corporations such as Pfizer and Microsoft.

Alpha-1 Foundation, as of July 1, 2018, Ken Irvine was re-elected to the board of the Alpha-1 Foundation (after rotating off in 2015 due to term limits), whose mission is find a cure for Alpha-1, a genetic lung disease that his late wife was diagnosed with 20 years ago. He is also a founding board member of The Alpha-1 Project, a value-added co-investor with biotech to accelerate finding a cure for Alpha-1. This venture philanthropy initiative enables the Alpha-1 Foundation to harvest the $71 million investment it has made in basic research by partnering with biotech companies to drive forward early stage drug development by de-risking the process. Today, TAP has invested in nine partnerships, including six genomic biotech’s. This strategy has paid off in the 7 of the 9 total that are now in clinical trials or will be by year-end 2018.
