Telehealth is one of medicine’s most promising innovations. Unlike many technologies, it does not just facilitate care – it is a way to provide care.

While telehealth has been around for decades, only recently has large-scale adoption started to occur. A number of forces are driving the trend including improved technology, consumer demand, value-based contracting, a growing physician shortage and widespread access at national pharmacy chains.

Yet many of today’s virtual visits are episodic and disjointed, which can lead to increased fragmentation and sub-optimal patient care. This is a result of multiple challenges to telemedicine’s adoption including physician resistance; interoperability issues with EHR integration; lack of universal reimbursement; and state licensing requirements.

Our panelists will discuss the benefits of telehealth as well as the obstacles we must overcome to make it an accepted and routine part of the care continuum.
