President and Chief Operating Officer Dan McCarthy joined Healthfirst in April 2008 as Executive Vice President and COO, with almost 20 years of experience in the healthcare industry—primarily in New York. In 2014, he assumed his present role and is currently responsible for Sales and Network Management, as well as Operations, IT, and Strategy Integration.
Earlier in his career, Mr. McCarthy was an executive with Empire BlueCross BlueShield of New York. During his 13 years there, he managed Network Contracting and Management, Senior Market Products, Individual Products, the New Jersey market, Medical Economics, and Group Underwriting, in addition to other responsibilities. Prior to joining Healthfirst, Mr. McCarthy served as President of Metcare Health Plans, Inc., a Medicare Advantage plan in Florida.
Mr. McCarthy’s experiences have given him unique insight into how healthcare is delivered and consumed in the New York market. Health plans have always had to focus on how to foster consumer confidence and growth by satisfying customers’ expectations within a fixed budget. This is an integral aspect of value-based care, which is gaining exposure. “Healthfirst is a great platform for accelerating the achievement of value-based care due to our relationship with the delivery system.” says Mr. McCarthy.
Mr. McCarthy holds a B.A. in both History and Political Science from Fordham University and an M.B.A. in both Finance and Management from the Stern School of Business at New York University.
