Bio: Robin Glazer

Robin Glazer helped found The Creative Center at University Settlement in 1994. She is the director of The Creative Center as well as an artist and art educator. As director, Robin designs and implements daily, free-of-charge, arts workshops (visual, performing, and literary) for people living with cancer and other chronic illnesses, a Hospital Artists-In-Residence Program in 30 sites in NY/NJ as well as 60 more nationwide, a gallery site featuring the artwork of professional artists living with illness and a training program in arts-in-health and creative aging for artists and administrators. Robin has co-authored a book, Artists-In-Residence: The Creative Center’s Approach to Arts in Healthcare and has produced a DVD that highlights the Artist-In-Residence Training. In 2011, Robin initiated a merger with the University Settlement- the oldest settlement house in the US, which provides social services to New York City’s underserved populations including older adults and immigrants, enabling The Creative Center to bring creative art experiences to vulnerable populations. In 2009, the National Endowment for the Arts selected The Creative Center as a “Best Practice Site.”

The Creative Center’s Training Institutes for Artists and Administrators in Arts in Healthcare and in Creative Aging have trained more than 400 people to work in a variety of healthcare settings that include Veteran’s Administration sites throughout the US. Additionally, The Creative Center’s Hospital Artist-In-Residence Programs (in more than 30 NY area hospitals and 60 more nationwide) has placed artists in many units that treat veterans including oncology, hospice and palliative care, cardiology, organ transplant, long-term care and rehabilitation, geriatrics and dementia disorders.

Medicine cures the body, but art heals the spirit…
